Re: “Anti-Racism Activists Accuse Durham Bar of Being Racist

Most of the yelp reviews now are obviously made by people from out of state who read the Fox News article and want to fool yelp by claiming they came through town "on a business trip" lol. It's like yeah I'm sure all y'all just happened to be over there on Thursday, nothing to do with the article posted that afternoon.

To me the most damning part of the article is that they recognized Takiyah Thompson and said so, that bit of context definitely makes it seem like they were looking for an excuse to hassle the group and when they saw the NY state ID they had a way to do it with some plausible deniability.

That's the way these things always work, it's like how black guys will get a ticket and get searched where a white guy gets a warning on some minor traffic violation. A big part of white privilege is you'll often be extended the courtesy of letting some technicality slide.

Which is I guess all to say that the bar being legally in the right as far as denying this 40 something man service because his govt issued ID was the wrong kind doesn't really seem like much of a defense against the accusations of racism.

If the bar had tossed out that guy who heckled them on their way out the door that'd be a much more compelling defense, but they didn't, they let him walk back in and keep drinking after he said "we're racists," i mean who just lets that guy keep drinking after being that out of pocket? Deny him service for belligerence.

If I'm being charitable, I'd say that I bet the bartender saw it as about politics not about race, but she refused that man service on purpose, not because her hands were tied legally. It's a polarized country and politics is petty and personal these days, after all, on the flip side at a liberal bar some guy comes in with a MAGA hat his IDs gonna get super scrutinized too. I'm not convinced the political vs racial motivation is that meaningful of a difference when the politics in question revolve around confederate monuments erected to intimidate black folks in the Jim Crow era... but I think it's at least worth mentioning.
