Wake Forest Dance Festival

When: Sat., Sept. 30, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. 2017
Price: free

Wake Forest isn't likely to top your list of Triangle dance hubs, but it may well move up a few spots after the inaugural Wake Forest Dance Festival on Saturday. Directed by former Martha Graham Dance Company principal Mariya "Masha" Dashkina Maddux and sponsored by Wake Forest Arts and the Town of Wake Forest, the daylong, outdoor dance festival takes place in the bucolic E. Carroll Joyner Park. Guided tours will usher festivalgoers through short pieces by locals such as Renay Aumiller Dances, Gaspard & Dancers, and former Carolina Ballet dancer Manuel Barriga, among other Triangle and Triad companies; the day will close with a "festival concert" featuring both professional dancers and advanced younger ones from the area. It's pitched as a family-friendly event, but dance-history nerds will want to note that Maddux and Miki Orihara, another former Graham principal, will perform works from the Graham repertoire, including the canonical 1930 solo Lamentation. —Michaela Dwyer
