Wake County Annual Public Library Book Sale & Festival

When: Feb. 17-20 2011

Those left heartbroken by the library's annual book sale being postponed last fall can rejoice: The sale is back, and it's located in newly spacious accommodations at the State Fairgrounds Exposition Center. (The last sale was held in a former grocery store that was so cramped, a line of a hundred people went out the door, like Studio 54 with literature instead of cocaine.) Approximately 450,000 used books will be at the sale, and let me assure you from personal experience—you'll find something you've been hunting for years, something you've been meaning to read and something you plain had no idea even existed. Adding to the event are special festivities throughout the weekend, including Turkish music, Irish dancers, Muddy the Mudcats mascot, e-book download demonstrations and more. The books go down in price throughout the weekend, from $4 hardcover and $1 paperback on Thursday to $5 for whatever you can shove in a box and $2 for a bag on Sunday. Clear off some shelf space or do some early Christmas/ birthday shoppin', but keep in mind, it's cash or check only. —Zack Smith
