Before 2016, there had never been a show on Broadway where women held the top four spots on the creative team. Then Waitress, a musical based on Adrienne Shelly's 2007 independent film of the same name, opened with director Diane Paulus at the helm, a new Sara Bareilles soundtrack, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and a script Jessie Nelson, completed after Shelly's untimely death. A slice-of-life dramatic comedy, it focuses on Jenna, a waitress stuck in a dead-end marriage in a small Southern town. An unplanned pregnancy removes the few options for escape she thought she had left. But Jenna has resources she's only partially aware of: a gang of misfit coworkers and regulars at the diner and a penchant for making pies that reflect the present moment in her life. Could that be all she needs to get self-esteem, happiness, and fulfillment back on the menu? —Byron Woods
