Wahya's, Brice Randall Bickford

When: Fri., Aug. 21, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
In early August, Brice Randall Bickford—the founder, voice and vision of The Strugglers for the last decade—returned to the stage for the first time in three years. It seems, though, that his Cat’s Cradle appearance wasn’t a mere aberration, as Bickford has scheduled more shows ahead of an imminent album release. The finished 10-song set, Paro, suggests an absentee evolution from Bickford, as these arrangements are more sophisticated and serpentine than those of his folk-rock past. His voice remains a polished baritone beauty, cracking into falsetto just at the edges and adding new emotional connotations to every word he sings. He opens for Wahya’s, the simple and simply great garage-rock outfit anchored by Joshua Johnson and Lindsey Sprague. Their songs bounce and brim, with hooks that lure you into chanting along. Several WXYC DJs join this back-to-school bash. —Grayson Haver Currin
