Re: “One nation under guns

To the dissenters: I think that you are missing a major point here. You only bring up issues that are symptomatic of the problem. Therein lies a major cause of the problem, which is, a complete unwillingness for society at large to accept responsibility for society's degredation. You point to reasons outside of yourself for why our children kill each other. But if one is going to blame society, one must recognize that he/she is part of society. We're all in this together. Violence isn't just a problem for those who are direct victims of it. Placing blame on the "left" or the "right" or on a particular point in history doesn't bring us any closer to a solution. If anything, it breeds anger and hatred by creating a disconnect between the individual and everyone else, between this group or that group. Concepts of "otherness" make it easy to equate those classified as "other" with "less valuable." It's a slippery slope. The very idea that another human being is somehow "less" enables someone to rationalize violence against that person. Perhaps, if we addressed the attitudes at the core of society (or rather the individuals that comprise society), the issues of violence and gun-control would be more easily ironed out.
