Von Ryan's Express

When: Fri., May 3, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $5-7

From the moment Frank Sinatra's swinging-hepcat mug shows up in the WWII adventure Von Ryan's Express, it's difficult not to think of the movie as Ocean's Great Escape. Sinatra stars as a hotshot American military man who attempts to lead a group of Allied POWs to freedom. Instead of Richard Attenborough, the movie has Trevor Howard as the ranking British officer with whom Sinatra's colonel butts heads. And instead of escaping Nazi Germany, the movie has Sinatra and company fleeing the much more scenic country of Italy. As much of a Great Escape carbon copy as this is, it's still a rousing (and, thanks to the ending, surprisingly grim) bit of throwback entertainment. The film was accepted by critics and audiences alike, raking in enough dough to be the 10th-highest grossing movie of 1965. —Craig D. Lindsey
