Vieux Farka Touré

When: Sat., Sept. 13, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$34
The son of legendary Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux Farka Touré has been tailed by the tag "world music" for his short, strong career. But his songs are actually rejoinders to that empty phrase, as he wills together the fleet fingerpicking of his heritage with contrasting senses of reggae esprit, pop affability and rock 'n' roll energy. In an ever-shrinking world, Touré is part of the vanguard that suggests no sound need exist in a vacuum. Don't fret, though, as Touré hasn't forsaken his father's work. He's an effortless guitar player, able to tear through complicated licks while staring coolly at a crowd or turning to direct his marvelous, magnetic band. —Grayson Haver Currin
