Variety Night, Beer Tasting & Meat Raffle

When: Sun., Nov. 24, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $7-10
Decades before Chuck Barris made a burlesque of the format with The Gong Show, Art Linkletter, Arthur Godfrey and Ted Mack found TV immortality hosting variety shows such as House Party, Talent Scouts and The Original Amateur Hour. All were fast-paced programs featuring performers with a broad (and at times unlikely) array of abilities. Their avuncular hosts ushered on musicians, magicians and comedians—as well as plate spinners, spoon players, ventriloquists and gymnasts. All of them, in John Cameron Mitchell's words, were purveyors of "the very business we call show."

The ArtsCenter brings this format back in a zany, family-friendly evening of magic, music and urban percussion. And baton twirling, juggling and flamenco. And quizzes, stand-up and sketch comedy. And beer tasting and Bhangra dance. And a meat raffle. And much, much more.

Guests include some of the region's most talented stage and musical acts, including Josh Lozoff, BackBeat, Ed Stephenson, Alphonse Nicholson, Sonja Bertucci, Carly Prentis Jones, Jackson Daniels, Gabriel Trop and John Boni. Brad Schnurr hosts. Oh, and Chapel Hill and Carrboro mayors Mark Kleinschmidt and Lydia Lavelle, respectively, will be on hand to pardon a Thanksgiving turkey. —Byron Woods
