Urban Soil

When: Fri., Jan. 4, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Crouched in an uncrowded corner of downtown Raleigh, a block off the strip of Glenwood South and a little more than a mile from the city's proper hub of rock clubs, Southland Ballroom seems like an outlier in the local music scene. And that's actually a good thing: The club smartly goes where most of its neighbors rarely tread, from the big beats of EDM to the infinite vistas of jam bands. With that plan, the club has reached the two-year milestone, which it commemorates this week with a spree of free shows. On Friday night, Urban Soil extends the funk at 9:30 p.m., while Supersonic—the self-described "party revolution"—plays Saturday at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin
