Untitled: Works from the Loop 2013-2017

When: Oct. 20-Nov. 3 2017

Just from reading the title and glimpsing the work, you might guess that Peter Hoffman's exhibit at SPECTRE Arts is documenting—through a glass, brightly—Durham's downtown loop. (I did.) But the Durham-based MFA candidate at UNC-Chapel Hill is actually refracting an area of downtown Chicago through his photographs and illuminated digital collage. This underscores the essential sameness beneath the superficial variety of the urban pedestrian's experience, as buildings, streets, and other walkers weave complex lines and parallax perspectives into an ungraspable sensory medium of form, motion, and space. The difference between looking at Hoffman's photos and his digital collage, where the code from original photos is smashed and reassembled, is like the difference between walking with a destination and walking without one, with paths of necessity decaying into enclosing abstractions of color and shape. After this opening reception, get in the loop through November 3. —Brian Howe
