Unraveling Beethoven

When: Fri., Sept. 30, 8 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 1, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: Free

Think of a musical composition’s various components—the individual parts written for each musician, the melodic lines and its accompaniment—as threads, woven together to make a sonic fabric. The wife and husband team of pianist Mimi Solomon and violinist Nicholas DiEugenio studied Beethoven’s ten violin sonatas for years before wondering what could be made if someone simply pulled out a few of those threads. Then they commissioned five friends to take on the challenge. We hear the results in a session where Solomon and DiEugenio perform the new creations of Allen Anderson, D.K. Garner, Robert Honstein, Jesse Jones and Tonia Ko—and then the Beethoven works that inspired them. —Byron Woods
