When: Thu., July 30 2015

SHADOWBOX STUDIO—In 1998, director Gus Van Sant released a shot-by-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 psychological horror classic, Psycho, with a new cast and color film. A largely pointless exercise, it did create the opportunity for movie geeks to pore over the minute differences. Durham photographer and filmmaker Alex Maness, co-owner of Shadowbox Studio, came upon the ingeniously simple idea of merging the two versions in a cinematic palimpsest. PSYCHO/PSYCHO overlays both films on a single screen, with Hitchcock's audio in one channel and Van Sant's in the other. Maness hasn't screened it in a couple of years, but you can immerse yourself in its insanity this week courtesy of the Unexposed experimental film series. The black-and-white images are spectral presences moving through the color, creating geometric configurations of imagery and some horrific overlays. We'd love to see Maness take on Michael Haneke's 1997 meta-shocker Funny Games, which the Austrian filmmaker remade with a British and American cast in 2007, as a sequel. 8 p.m., free, 900 E.
