Drama, War

Director Angelina Jolie's adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's harrowing, bestselling nonfiction book tells the story of Olympic athlete Louie Zamperini (Jack O'Connell), who endured an incredible series of traumas during World War II. After surviving for 47 days adrift on a raft in the Pacific, he suffered for more than two years in a Japanese POW camp. O'Connell is impressive in the role, undergoing extreme physical changes, from buff runner to emaciated prisoner. The second half of the film is very hard to stomach, and should be required viewing for anyone who thinks torture is ever justifiable. Though technically proficient in almost every way, with an A-list creative team (the Coen brothers co-wrote the script), the film has a lack of clarity about what drove Zamperini to survive. There are some shapeless sentiments, couched in swelling string music, at the center of this otherwise steely-eyed film. This thematic blurriness keeps it from soaring, but it's still a hell of a story, well-told—and a remarkable portrait of human endurance and will.
