Unbelievable Things: 25 Years of Art on Merge Records

When: July 18-Aug. 9 2014
Album art is almost as important as the record it advertises—when it comes to music, people tend to judge by the cover. But rarely is album art thought about as actual, y'know, art. As a part of Merge's 25th-anniversary celebration, this exhibit seeks to change that, showcasing the original pieces behind some of the label's best-known covers, stripped of distracting text. Visitors will recognize parts of Arcade Fire's Funeral, Wye Oak's Shriek, Caribou's Andorra and, of course, several Superchunk covers. It's an interesting peek into a less-explored aspect of label life and runs through Aug. 9. This opening reception features instrumental music from the longtime Merge outfit Shark Quest. —Allison Hussey
