Jaheim’s prime as R&B’s roughneck balladeer opened the floodgates for a lot of brothas to think they were that smooth: Throw on a pair of designer shades, find the bass in your voice and do your best Teddy Pendergrass. But there are the rare cases, like Oxford, North Carolina’s Tyrand, where that style of grown-man R&B goes over well enough to keep you and your partner two-stepping, smooching or simply smiling. Those moments abound on his debut LP, The Love Lounge, and they should feel extra cozy in this intimate setting. —Eric Tullis
