In the late '90s, before it was called Youth Noise Network, a team of Durham teenage broadcasters went by the name Youth Voice Radio. Back then, a 12-year-old hip-hop aspirant named Elijah Vick snuck his way into the organization and began hosting a weekly show on WXDU 88.7 FM. He started hanging out late at the studio while Samps, Daddy Rich and 9th Wonder hosted one of the station's early hip-hop mix shows. Vick learned the technical savvy of hip-hop, and from those experiences, his rapper-producer moniker Tyler Hipnosis was born. Since then, he's been a manchild of boom-bap and experimental hip-hop, bouncing in and out of the Triangle rap scene with sporadic releases and shows. It's been five years since he put out Respect the Craft; he's been busy raising a family and heading his sound engineering company Audio Rule. With his new Did You Hear that New? now ready, we hope that the fancy engineering experience doesn't get in the way of the lo-fi rap smacks that Tyler Hipnosis claims are his trade secret. Skyblew, DJ Treee City and Alex Aff open. —Eric Tullis
