Two Trains Runnin'

When: Fri., April 28, 6 p.m. 2017
Price: Free

The civil rights struggle in America reached a fever pitch in the summer of 1964. In July, the Civil Rights Act passed, mere weeks after the disappearance of three activists whose bodies were discovered two months later in Mississippi, the victims of a KKK lynch mob. That milieu serves as the setting for Two Trains Runnin', a 2016 documentary directed by Academy Award-nominee Sam Pollard that focuses on an incendiary era by juxtaposing two cars full of young college-age music fans, one searching for blues legend Skip James and one in search of Son House, with activists traversing the same roads in their voter-registration efforts at great risk. Subtitled "The Incredible Story of the Search for America's Past," the film includes interviews from eyewitnesses of the moment, narration by Common, music by Gary Clark Jr., and commentary about the blues from folks like Buddy Guy and Lucinda Williams. This screening at Wake Tech, cosponsored by Duke's Center for Documentary Studies, features a post-screening Q and A with producer Ben Hedin and is free with an online reservation. —David Klein
