Twilight Singers, Margot & the Nuclear So & So's

When: Sat., May 7, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $15-18

Greg Dulli formed the Twilight Singers in 1997 as a creative pressure valve during an artistic squabble with Elektra, the label for his other band, Afghan Whigs. The Whigs finally petered out in 2001, meaning the onetime side project has persisted so long that the Singers' tenure is now only a year short of the band whose break-time they were meant to fill. Dynamite Steps, the sixth Twilight Singers record and first for uber-indie imprint Sub Pop, finds Dulli's wobbly croons and raspy shouts conveying his persistently dark lyrical preoccupations as urgently as ever. With a six-piece touring band, the live show promises to ably translate all of the record's nuanced dynamics—from rain-soused piano melodies to hurtling guitar detonations, often in the span of a single song. Opening is Margot & the Nuclear So and So's, an art-rock band originally from Indianapolis. —Jeff Klingman
