The latest from British filmmaker Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame) is an aesthetically sophisticated, unnervingly visceral cinematic reminder that slavery did happen—and we should never forget it. By adapting the true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a well-respected, fiddle-playing family man who gets drugged, kidnapped and sold into slavery, McQueen takes advantage of his widescreen canvas, showing in vivid detail all the inhumanity Northup and others experienced. Through the amazing, appalling story of Solomon Northup, this movie recreates how painfully wicked our country once was. Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti and Brad Pitt also co-star.

Director: Steve McQueen
Writer: John Ridley and Solomon Northup
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, Quvenzhané Wallis, Garret Dillahunt and Scoot McNairy
