Twelve Thousand Armies, R Mutt, Summercamp Casanova

When: Sat., June 30, 10 p.m. 2012

The breeziest, most buoyant pop sometimes carries the deepest emotional scars—frothy melody overcompensating for romantic disasters and deep depression. Such is the case with Chapel Hill's Twelve Thousand Armies, who power their pristine pop throwbacks with a litany of fractured feelings. High and breathy, Justin Williams' Lennon-esque croon condenses broken hearts into cathartic couplets. Meanwhile, his band sways with catchy abandon. Also playing are R. Mutt, a boozy bar band that pulls Springsteenian grit through a slacker fuzz filter, and Summer Camp Casanova, whose ballads emerge from a warming lo-fi haze. The 10 p.m. show costs $5. —Jordan Lawrence
