Turtle Island Quartet

When: Sat., Jan. 28, 8 p.m. 2012
Phone: 919-515-1100
Price: $14-23

It's as fortunate as it is telling that the Turtle Island String Quartet dropped the "String" bit of its name several years ago. In effect, the move of omission emphasized that Turtle Island isn't a stuffy, standard organization covering the chamber essentials for an isolated audience. Rather, their broad stylistic reach and technical integration of jazz and folk forms underscore their aim for bigger ideas and audiences. Tonight, they'll explore their Grammy-winning 2007 ode to the music of John Coltrane in what promises to be a highlight of N.C. State's Center Stage season. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show run $24–28, with discounts for N.C. State staff and students. —Grayson Currin
