There’s more distinction to tUnE-yArDs than the sticky-caps name, now plaguing copy editors for the better part of a decade. Across three records, including this year’s wonderful and wild Nikki Nack, Merrill Garbus has rendered and refined one of indie rock’s most identifiable if polarizing aesthetics. A bit like David Byrne, she writes in rhythms and melodies, so that the mutated beat and the bent hook wrap around one another in roller-coaster helices. Nikki Nack is a personal and political album, full of confessions and criticisms that sound urgent whether Garbus shouts them over handclaps and fiddles or loud synthesizers. An alternate universe pop superstar, she’s one of modern music’s most distinct stylists. With James Tillman. —Grayson Haver Currin
