Re: “Morgan Street is now 2-way: That is, twice as good as 1-way

This particular one-way pair - Hillsborough and Morgan Street - deformed this part of Raleigh for over thirty-five years. Arthur Gordon, the proprietor of Irregardless Cafe, remembers that the north-south street that had been Harrison Avenue was widened, paved, and renamed West Morgan right before his cafe opened. It immediately became a speedway and a great location for cops to lie in wait for speeders when they needed to "make their quota."
Good things have been happening in this area over the past few years. Putting power lines underground in front of St. Mary's School has greatly improved the appearance of Hillsborough Street. Two waying Morgan and building a roundabout at Morgan and Hillsborough will rationalize traffic movement and improve walkability at that intersection. Eight new faculty residences at St. Mary's School have set a high architectural standard for infill development in the area.
Let's hope Raleigh's City Council will have the collective vision to appropriately rezone the Bolton tract, after sixty years of neglect by its owners.
