TRUTH TO POWER 3

PLEIADES GALLERY, DURHAM | FRIDAY, AUG. 21

Much political art flirts with ambiguity. Pleiades Gallery's annual Truth to Power group show dispenses with the pretense. The third outing includes photography, mixed media, painting, sculpture, video and work in other mediums by more than 20 guest artists, all directly engaging with social justice. The artists address a wide range of ongoing issues, but as you can imagine, reflections of our moment—Confederate flags, police brutality and gun violence—stand out. At the Third Friday reception, you'll find a juror talk by UNC-Chapel Hill professor and artist elin o'Hara slavick and an open mic, outside in Five Points Plaza, hosted by the African American Cultural Festival of Raleigh and Wake County. The open mic includes several featured local performers: jazz singer Sandra Dubose, guitarist Warren Sharp and spoken-word artists Val Jones and Kim McCrae. Singers, poets, actors and other performers are invited to add their voices to the mix. The show runs through Aug. 30.

6–9 p.m., free, 109 E. Chapel Hill St., Durham, 919-797-2706, www.pleiadesartdurham.com.Brian Howe
