For the second consecutive summer, Pleiades devotes a juried show to political work by North Carolina artists. It reveals not only which issues matter to them, but also how they express them in various media. Last year's exhibit included many works that manifested the emotion and meaning of an issue through the aesthetic and material of an artifact, such as Claudia Corletto's coat hanger sculpture, which implicated a McCrory bill that severely limited abortion access in the state. But some artists seemed unaware of disconnects between their politics and aesthetics. Several photographs rendered Moral Monday protests static or incoherent, at formal odds with their intent. It will be interesting to see how this year's show compares, since the state remains as divided and exhausted as ever. This Third Friday reception bursts out of the gallery's doors with an open mike in Five Points Plaza. —Chris Vitiello
