TROUBLE IN PARADISE

FRIDAY, MARCH 6, RALEIGH

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART—Forget Will Smith in Focus; try this classic con-com on for size. Director Ernst Lubitsch was the architect of the modern comedy, combining colorful characters, trenchant satire, zany plots and just the right dose of humanity in what became known as "The Lubitsch Touch." A prime example is this 1932 film, considered by many to be his best, which combines the barbed one-liners of a drawing-room comedy with the pre-Code innuendo of a screwball comedy. Herbert Marshall and Miriam Hopkins play two con artists pretending to be upper-class. They figure out each other's scams, then team up to fleece a wealthy widow (Kay Francis) who's more canny than she looks—all while trying to fight the fact that they're made for each other. Wickedly clever, the movie's got more edge and heart than most romantic comedies produced almost a century later. 8 p.m., $5,

2110 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, 919-839-6262,
