Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

When: Fri., Nov. 15, 8 p.m. 2013
In the past decade, the 27-year-old trumpeter and bandleader Trombone Shorty has played with U2, CeeLo, Green Day and Eric Clapton, and he's taken his band, Orleans Avenue, to the totemic closing spot of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. A native of the Treme neighborhood, he was born into the brass-band funk he now updates with rock 'n' roll gusto and a backing outfit that can glide or pound as needed. A music educator in New Orleans and an emissary for the city's music when he leaves to tour, Trombone Shorty has become the young public face of Big Easy traditions, whether that means roughing up "Other Side of the Street" or reuniting The Meters to back him for a cover of their own tune on his September release, Say That to This. —Grayson Haver Currin
