Tristan Clopet, The Bear Romantic

When: Fri., June 10, 9 p.m. 2011

The oddest thing about The Bear Romantic is its origin. Songwriter Jesse Clasen's other project, the Charlotte-based band Harvard, plays overwrought cock rock and prog. In The Bear Romantic's Firewood, though, Clasen explores gorgeous acoustic timbres and unsettling, insular imagery. It's a fantastic album, richly produced and emotionally complex, almost making the singer-songwriter's previous work with mall-rock modeled on At the Drive-In forgivable. It all depends on where his heart is, really. If his future sounds like The Bear Romantic, then Clasen has a lot to offer. Headlining is Tristan Clopet; think Duncan Sheik on the quad with an acoustic.—Corbie Hill
