Trinumeral Show with Brand New Life, Chit Nasty, Toon

When: Fri., Nov. 11, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $8

Seth Barden, bassist of The Brand New Life, has long been contemplating a trinumeral celebration show. "Me and our drummer, Daniel Yount, were kind of superstitious back in the day," Barden says. "We always used to make a little wish on 11/11. So we've been thinking about this day for years. It seemed like a perfect time to do a show that's a little bit special."

Providing the special are their pals at Durty Durham Art Collective, who fill out this bill with a multimedia swirl of visual artists and bands. On the music side, emcee Toon (aka Kurrell Rice) opens; then Chit Nasty takes over with a Rick James-meets-Little Richard vibe, yielding a brand of funky rock that's louder than mixed plaids. Headliner The Brand New Life's jazzy chassis rides on West African power grooves, like mbalax and Afrobeat, featuring Senegalese talking drummer Mamadou Mbengue. The high energy won't end there, as Treee City (aka Durty's Patrick Phelps-McKeown) layers his live and sampled electronica to take the dance party higher.

Painter Brian Crabtree will be working on a fresh canvas throughout the evening, and Durty's minions will play on the number 11 using projectors and other visual media. What better way to ward off evil and secure good luck than with a party that comes just once a century? The 9 p.m. show costs $8. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
