Tres Chicas, Chuck Prophet

When: Fri., July 23, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $15

Chuck Prophet and his music have always been tough to pin down. He's part singular solo artist, part gotta-have-him session guitarist, part out-of-left-field interpreter (he de- and then re-constructed Waylon Jennings' Dreaming My Dreams) and part prolific collaborator—with his wife, Stephanie Finch, with Alejandro Escovedo, with legends Jim Dickinson and Dan Penn. His sound is part expansive desert and part alley-party urban, bursting with the spirits of San Francisco, Memphis, Tucson and, courtesy of last year's Let Freedom Ring!, Mexico City. In short, he's part country-soul cowboy and part rocking Green on Red bluesman.

With the Triangle's Tres Chicas, though, you know exactly what you have: Lynn Blakey, Caitlin Cary and Tonya Lamm are triplet daughters from different mothers, with the sisterly harmonies and shared senses of humor to prove it. Feel free to call them country-soul cowgirls who rock, too. —Rick Cornell
