Toro Y Moi, The Choir Quit, Can't Kids, Organos

When: Wed., Sept. 26, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15-17

Just two years ago, South Carolina's Chaz Bundick, better known as Toro Y Moi, was part of a thrilling but also ridiculous scene called "chillwave." Its tenets were fuzzy grooves and retro moves. Since then, Bundick has made it clear he's a diverse and ambitious songwriter and producer (and, as Les Sins, even a beatmaker). 2011's Underneath the Pine offered a Jim O'Rourke-like clump of compositional pop, shirking the chillwave of 2010's Causers of This. Last fall's EP Freaking Out! doubled down on the nostalgia and dove headfirst into '80s boogie.

This year, though, he remixed Tyler, the Creator of Odd Future's "French!" (the confrontational frontman has cited Bundick as one of his favorites) and entered the big, scary festival circuit. At Lollapalooza, he moved his moody disco-funk into harder, better, faster, stronger territory, without losing his nerd-in-a-bedroom-on-his-laptop charm. Not bad for someone who, a couple years ago, was shuffling around with just a microphone and a vintage synthesizer. Be prepared to stare down a formidable indie funk foursome. The Choir Quit, Can't Kids and Organos open. —Brandon Soderberg
