While George Clooney has done an admirable job helping to bring the cool caper flick back into cinematic vogue with theOcean'strilogy (as well as the upcoming World War II art-heist filmThe Monuments Men, which he directed), you may have to go back to the 1960s, that golden age of heist movies, for stylish and fun caper classics. None is more entertaining than Topkapi, a gorgeous, adventurous romp made in 1964 by blacklisted expatriate Jules Dassin, who previously delved into heist territory with the amazingFrench noirRififi in 1955. Topkapi features Melina Mercouri (who later became Dassin's wife) as the ravenous woman who rounds up a crew to rob an emerald-encrusted dagger from the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Maximilian Schell, Robert Morley and Peter Ustinov (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role) play the criminally dubious fellows who aid her in this endeavor. —Craig D. Lindsey
