Tony Rice Unit

When: Fri., May 18, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

For more than 40 years, Virginia-born guitarist Tony Rice has been regarded as one of the finest and most influential pickers in folk music, whether performing in progressive-minded groups with icons such as Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and Norman Blake or leading his own accomplished quintet. Though Rice largely lost his stellar singing ability nearly two decades ago to muscle tension dysphonia, it hasn't hurt his instrumental abilities, which remain second to none. The Grammy winner merges classical technique and a hefty jazz influence—Rice even recorded a Miles Davis composition in the '80s—into the newgrass ideology he helped invent. Catching a legend of Rice's stature is always a treat, but especially when it's free. Expect the lawn to fill up early for this 6 p.m. show. —Spencer Griffith
