Tony Furtado

When: Thu., Aug. 20, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $12-$15
At the start of Tony Furtado’s The Bell, on opening track “Broken Bell,” creaks, rattles and clanking chains warn of something mysterious. The fiddle suggests a stark desert landscape. Furtado’s music isn’t exuberant, rambling bluegrass; it’s deliberate and measured, as every note Furtado plucks on his banjo carries a weight and a full resonance. Furtado explores the darker side of the genre while mixing in bits of alternative rock and pop. The results are mixed but interesting, as he pushes a genre too often strangled by its own roots. —Justin Weber
