When: Wed., Sept. 26, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

Look to either side next time you're at a stoplight. Chances are good one of the drivers next to you is belting out lyrics into a phantom mic behind a rolled-up window. Rodrigo Dorfman's latest documentary film

Tommy! Dreams I Keep Inside Me will thrill the singer inside everyone, taking us into the world of an autistic man who wants nothing more than to stride onstage and croon in front of a jazz band. Dorfman follows 60-year-old Tommy through his community of autistic adults, showing us his daily triumphs and failures as he searches for that opportunity to sing. And when Tommy does sing, even in an impromptu telephone audition included in the film's trailer, your jaw will drop. Both the filmmaker and his ruby-throated subject will attend this screening, and Southern Documentary Fund director Rachel Raney will moderate a post-film discussion. Dorfman will also screen his hot 2011 short One Night in Kernersville, about jazz composer and bass player John Brown's preparations for a recording session. Brown directs jazz studies at Duke and kicks ass on the bass to boot. Dorfman garnered a Full Frame Jury Award for best short for Kernersville. —Chris Vitiello
