Tobacco in Durham? No, it's not a visual art installation exploring the advertising legacy of the Duke family or a sound-art installation meant to turn the Lucky Strike tower into a massive resonance chamber. Instead, Tobacco is the stagename of Thomas Fec, an electronic producer who braids chromatic synthesizer lines through walloping rhythms and manipulated-and-mangled samples. His forthcoming Ultima II Massage suggests a weekend retreat with DJ Shadow and Fuck Buttons, the filmic grandeur of the former affixed to the ecstatic noise of the latter. Fec's music is unequal parts surrealist pop and warped electronica, a demented collage meant to make you dance and sing, even when there are no words. Fec's Pennsylvania pals, The Stargazer Lillies, open. —Grayson Haver Currin
