To Live and Die in L.A. and The Stunt Man

When: July 27-Aug. 2 2012

This theater couldn't have picked two morenight-and-day movies for its latest Summer Classics Film Series doublefeature. First up is The French Connection director William Friedkin'snasty (and, to some, dated) bit of pulp from 1985, starring a youngWilliam Petersen as a cocky (in every sense of the word) Secret Serviceagent breaking every rule imaginable in order to arrest Willem Dafoe's trendy counterfeiter. After that, we have Freebie and the Bean director Richard Rush's long-lost, deliriously devious 1980 Hollywood satire, where recent retiree Peter O'Toole plays an unscrupulous movie directorwho hires a fugitive (Steve Railsback) as a stunt double. If there'sanything these movies share, it's the belief that Hollywood is hardlythe land of dreams it's always billed itself as. Some nightmarish shithappens there as well. The movies start playing this week. —Craig D. Lindsey
