To Kill a Mockingbird

When: March 10-20 2011
Price: $20

In our 3 1/2-star review of this production last September, we praised Liz Beckham's winning performance as a woman who first looks back and then re-enters her tomboy days in the central role of Scout, as well as the direction of Randolph Rand. We also appreciated Roger Rathburn's understated, and at times bewildered, take—at least when compared with Gregory Peck's iconic movie performance—on Atticus Finch, the small-town lawyer facing a no-win situation when he tries to take on Jim Crow in a Southern court. The set designed by the Snow Cooperative, with its odd little dollhouse that becomes something very different, has never entirely left our mind. Unfortunately, neither has the rather outré physical expression Rand coaxed out of the otherwise interesting Samantha Rahn during her depiction of sour Miss Dubose's last days. But the play's brisk direction, its refreshing views on familiar characters and strong supporting work by Whitney Madren and Jeff Cheek make for a production worth consulting in this encore presentation through March 20. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays–Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $20. —Byron Woods
