To Catch a Dollar: Muhammad Yunus Banks on America

When: Thu., March 31, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Select multiplexes—Social entrepreneurship is all the rage, it seems, yet one of its leading lights, Muhammad Yunus, is facing legal difficulties in his home country of Bangladesh. Yunus, an economist, won the Nobel Prize for his work with microfinance; with his Grameen Bank, he sought to make small but real improvements in the lives of the poor by supplying women with (very) small business loans. Millions of such small loans later, Yunus wants to bring microfinance to America. Well, if it works in Bangladesh, let's give it a shot here, shall we?

Tonight is a nationwide simulcast of Gayle Ferraro's documentary film, which will be accompanied by a taped segment featuring Yunus and CNBC celebrity anchor Maria Bartiromo, and featuring visits by Suze Orman, Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon and Russell Simmons (in ascending order of coolness, if not financial expertise). Normal movie ticket prices apply. There's one showtime only at 7:30 p.m., in four area multiplexes. —David Fellerath
