Titus Andronicus

Titus Andronicus, Spider Bags, Baked

When: Mon., Sept. 14, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $10

In the early winter of 2008, Carrboro's Spider Bags and New Jersey's Titus Andronicus crammed into the corner of Dain's Place, a relatively new and congenitally cramped pub on Durham's 9th Street. Spider Bags had just issued their debut, and Titus Andronicus were a few months away from offering their own, the raging if sophisticated entrée, The Airing of Grievances. Both were loud and aggressive, offering vivid and distinct visions of rock 'n' roll. Honky-tonk and blues undercurrents rippled like veins beneath Spider Bags' garage rock, while the big dynamic moves and broad thematic concerns of Titus Andronicus suggested art-rock aspirations. In the past decade, a lot has changed for both acts: They've leapfrogged to bigger labels, both arriving at Merge in recent years, and they've both lost members, hit slumps and emerged as better bands for them. Those early indications have only expanded, too, so that Spider Bags now frontload their magnetic songs with doses of old and weird Americana, while Titus Andronicus rebounded from a weak release to issue the audacious and accomplished 90-minute rock opera, The Most Lamentable Tragedy, at July's end. And they're still bros bound by shared New Jersey roots, but going to interesting places on their own. With Baked. 8 p.m., $10, 300 E.
