Tipple, The July Issue

When: Sun., Sept. 20, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5-$10
Typically, a jazz improviser steps out in front of an ensemble to solo over top of it. Not so in Norway, where improvisation is integrated within an ensemble’s playing. Sax legend Frode Gjerstad’s trio, Tipple, fits this holistic bill. Their full and even sometimes hard sound might make you wonder if musicians aside from David Watson (electric guitar and bagpipes) and Kevin Norton (vibes and drums) are hidden around the stage. This music’s always moving forward (Gjerstad’s been compared to Sonny Rollins), so you just go with it. —Chris Vitiello
