Tim Anderson

When: Sun., Aug. 3, 2 p.m. 2014
In his 2011 memoir Tune in Tokyo: The Gaijin Diaries, Tim Anderson bumbled his way through Japanese culture after escaping there from his native Raleigh. We learn more about what he was escaping from in second memoir Sweet Tooth, which delves into Anderson's coming of age as a gay type-1 diabetic in the inhospitable North Carolina of Jesse Helms. Confessional, self-effacing and funny, the book has special appeal for N.C. denizens who will recognize the culture, locales and even people. This "sloppy/elegant afternoon of booze and book readin'," as Anderson calls it, requires registration at Eventbrite.com. Show up and do something memorable; maybe you'll wind up in memoir number three. —Brian Howe
