Director Alan Taylor, best known for his work on such TV shows as Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, is welcomed into the filmmaking universe of comic book movies with the latest release from Marvel, Thor: The Dark World. The latest adversaries to our Norse God hero are the Dark Elves, an ancient race reputed to have inhabited the universe before light, and determined to bring darkness down upon everything once more. Thor was always considered to be the biggest gamble of the characters to receive movies during the first wave of Marvel films; the series mythology involves a juggling act of sci-fi settings and ancient religion, neither of which are necessarily easy sells to audiences. With this latest film, it is clear that the franchise's biggest asset is its cast. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have chemistry as the mismatched lovers, while Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard serve as both comic relief and audience surrogates. What is becoming clearer with each passing film is Tom Hiddleston's undeniable star power. The actor's portrayal of Loki, Thor's treacherous brother, has quickly became a fan favorite; as important to this franchise as Anthony Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lecter was to Silence of the Lambs, and destined to spin-off into its own film as well.
