This Gun For Hire

When: Fri., Oct. 5, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Veronica Lake's glacial hair and placid stare ... Alan Ladd's stoic menace. But neither are exactly what they seem in the 1942 film noir classic This Gun for Hire, part of a series that celebrates the women of noir throughout the fall at the museum. A pastiche of double-crosses and double agents, the movie's story is entertainingly convoluted. But every character is delightfully quirky, Lake is devastating to look at and the film's wartime ethos offers interesting cultural connections. In short, it's a killer. Lake will be particularly fresh-faced in a Universal Archive print. NCMA film curator and Indy contributor Laura Boyes introduces the film, which screens at 8 p.m. in the East Building auditorium. —Chris Vitiello
