Writer-director Paul Haggis' latest weaves multiple storylines together with tenuous connections, much like his Oscar-winning Crash did years earlier. It stars an assortment of big names including Liam Neeson, Adrien Brody, James Franco and Mila Kunis. But the film comes to mirror the critique given to a Neeson's character, an author not dissimilar from Haggis himself, when an editor says his story is a collection of "random characters making various excuses for your life." The movie feels as detached as its titular narrative mode.
