Theresa Levitt

When: Sun., Dec. 29, 3 p.m. 2013
The French scientist Augustin-Jean Fresneldeveloped a new theory of light and invented the Fresnel lens, which is now used in lighthouses around the world. Theresa Levitt tells Fresnel's story in detail in A Short Bright Flash: Augustin Fresnel and the Birth of the Modern Lighthouse, which she'll read from and discuss at this signing. The former McDonnell-Barksdale Chair of History of Science at the University of Mississippi, Levitt brings her experience to the tale of the man who probably kept the Outer Banks from being more littered with the wreckage of downed ships. —Zack Smith
