The Woman in Black

When: Fri., Oct. 7 2011
I saw The Woman in Black in London about 11 years ago, when already it was one of the longest-running shows in the West End. I was amid an avant-garde theater phase and was rather skeptical about reviews calling it a "thriller." Nevertheless, it had been running since 1987. Rarely does a show live up to its hype, but this one did. I was truly scared out of my worn red velvet seat and loved every second of it. This show succeeds by demanding our close attention from the outset, and then, before you know it, Bam!—you've been dropped into the haunted mansion on the hill and there's no way out. The Woman in Black, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from a book by Susan Hill, celebrated its 9,000th show in the West End this summer. Don't miss a chance to see Raleigh Little Theatre's version, directed by Haskell Fitz-Simons. It opens tonight and runs through Oct. 23, with shows Thursdays–Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. —Christina Cass
