The Whigs, Ponderosa

When: Fri., Oct. 5, 8:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $12

"Staying Alive" is the eight-minute opener from Enjoy the Company, the fourth album by Georgia band The Whigs. Vitality is a fitting theme for the decade-old group, and the song leaves plenty of room for them to show off their versatility: Covering a jaunty pop shuffle in cozy slacker-rock distortion, it opens with an irresistible rendition of the band's catchy, country-inflected attack, bolstered by bright horn blasts. But after the halfway point, everything goes quiet. The guitars turn up again slowly and build to a strung-out, Crazy Horse-style catharsis. Fetching and forceful, The Whigs are a great pop band with many tricks at their disposal. The $12 show starts at 8:30 p.m. with Ponderosa. —Jordan Lawrence
