The Weather Station

The Weather Station, Andy Shauf, Jake Xerxes Fussell

When: Sat., July 18, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$12

Of all the varied virtues a singer-songwriter might possess—from penning pithy descriptions of poignant scenes to crafting new aphorisms in a chorus or verse—patience might be the most overlooked and undervalued. Get to the hook already, right? For the last six years, Toronto's Tamara Lindeman has crafted increasingly stunning records under the name The Weather Station, culminating in this year's beautiful and beguiling Loyalty. For those 11 hushed songs, Lindeman lets listeners linger on a half-whispered, half-sung phrase or wait with expectation while she splits some revelation across a considered musical rest. Her work urges you to lean in with anticipation, so that the slowly delivered truths of her songs about love, loss, loneliness, regret and hope arrive as quickly as they can. Lindeman has mastered both vivid illustrations and incisive lines while writing her songs, but her real power stems from the deliberate, diligent way she delivers them, meting out one line only to make you need the next. The Weather Station's Paradise of Bachelors labelmate, Jake Xerxes Fussell, opens, along with Canada's Andy Shauf.

9 p.m., $10–$12, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919-667-1100, —Grayson Haver Currin
